At least 15 people lost their lives after a fire broke out at Nairobi’s Gikomba Market in the early morning hours of Thursday, June 27. Over 60 others were admitted at the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) after suffering burns following the incident
The incident was confirmed by the Kenya Red Cross Society who stated the fire caused extensive damage to property worth millions of shillings at the Kwa Mbao section of the popular second hand clothes market.
“Fifteen dead so far, six bodies in various hospitals including four female children, nine bodies still in the ill fated building,” said Regional Commander for Nairobi, Kangethe Thuku. According to the Kenya Red Cross , the fire was contained by Nairobi City County fire brigade.
The flames broke out at around 9pm on Wednesday, June 27, according to the Kenya Red Cross, before spreading to other parts of the market.
